Every year, our PTA organizes a wide range of programs, activities and events celebrating art, science, international cultures, music, movement and our fantastic school community.

Fabulous Fall Fundraiser

The Fabulous Fall Fundraiser is a lively neighborhood adults-only event with delicious food, festive beverages, kickin’ music, raffle prizes and a live auction. Each year, we ask parents, caregivers, teachers, leaders, staff and community partners to join this annual autumnal tradition as we raise money to support teacher wish lists, kinesthetic classroom equipment, and more.

PTA Reflections Art Contest

This is a national PTA contest in which students can participate in any of 6 artistic categories.  Each year has a different them and all MVCS winners will go on to the Alexandria City level, and then to the state level.

Flamingo Flocking

Nothing says “Happy Birthday,” “Congratulations” or “You’re My Favorite Neighbor” like a festive pink flock of flamingos scattered throughout a front yard! When you “flock” your friends or family, a surprise flock of forty (or so) flamingos will arrive in their yard overnight. The flamingos flit, flirt and hang about for three days, then disappear as quietly as they arrived. We request a minimum donation of $100 per flock. To book a flock, please make a donation to the PTA in our online shop, then forward your receipt to our Flocker-in-Chief at MVCSPTAFlocking@gmail.com with the details of your request.

BIG FLEA

The MV Big Flea is a gigantic flea market fundraiser held each spring to raise money for grade level projects, enrichment opportunities and school assemblies, as well as funding a critical portion of our operating budget for the year.

Blessings in a Backpack

This program serves families in our community who struggle with food insecurity. Blessings in a Backpack (BIAB) is a national program designed to supply kids with food for the weekend. Free meals are currently available during the week at school, but for many kids, there is a real risk of not having enough to eat over the weekend. With the very generous support of the PTA, individual parents, and neighbors, MVCS’s BIAB program puts together two-days’ worth of meals and snacks for over 100 kids each week during the school year. Now in our seventh year, we have been lucky to have the enthusiastic support of school staff (who identify the kids who need this help the most and discreetly distribute the bags each week) and wonderful volunteers who come in once a month to pack the bags, or once a week to transport bags from the ALIVE warehouse in south Old Town to the school. For more information about the program or to volunteer, please email MVCSBIAB@gmail.com.

Health + Wellness

Our PTA coordinates activities designed to inspire healthy habits and social-emotional well-being for our kids. Some of the activities that the committee has overseen in the past include the Bike Rodeo, Safe Routes to School, the MVCS Mile, healthy food tastings, dental screening and optical care.

Healthy Kids Fun Run

In concert with the annual Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) each fall, MVCS students participate in the 1-mile fun run, held at the Pentagon. Participants receive a medal and the five local schools with the most runners each receive a monetary prize.

International Night

One of our favorite and most highly-attended events celebrates the diversity of the world’s nations and the heritage of many of our school families. Kids who attend receive a special passport which they can have stamped for each country featured at the tables set up throughout our school hallways. Each country table features photos, facts, foods, instruments, arts and crafts, coins, videos, puzzles, games and other emblems and activities. We come together as a community in our cafeterias to share international cuisine provided by local restaurants.

Science Night

If your kids like to make slime, are curious about robotics or wonder why their heart rate changes when they run fast, bring them to Science Night! Dozens of experiments, demonstrations and hands-on activities await. Kids will learn science, technology and engineering concepts–including how to build a geodesic dome from gum drops and toothpicks and how to uncover the the magnetism of certain breakfast cereals!

SPIRIT WEAR

Show your MVCS pride by sporting MVCS spirit wear! The PTA sells red, blue and white kid and adult-size shirts and hoodies throughout the year. Be sure to sign up for our email list to receive notice of upcoming opportunities to stock your closet and locker!

TEACHER APPRECIATION

We LOVE our teachers! We are always looking for creative and meaningful ways to let our teachers, paraprofessionals and school staff know how much we value them and everything they do for our kids. Each fall, we provide mini-grants to help new and returning teachers purchase supplies not funded by ACPS or MVCS. We host back-to-school lunches at community restaurants and healthy snacks and dinner on the nights teachers stay late for parent-teacher conferences.

UNIFORM CLOSET

The MVCS Uniform Closet provides families with FREE school uniform clothing for students. We welcome and appreciate donations of gently worn, used or new uniform pieces. If you have clothing to donate or if your child needs clothing, please contact Rosa Landeros.

YEARBOOK

PTA volunteers curate photos and memories from throughout the year then design our colorful and treasured school yearbook. The yearbook features school pictures taken in the fall in addition to photos submitted by parent, teachers and volunteers. With that said, we are always looking for photos to feature in the yearbook! First day of school, classroom projects, playground fun, school activities – we would love to see them all!
