Fall Courtyard & Garden Spruce-Up: Nov. 7, 2014

It’s that time of year when we have some garden sprucing up to do. We’ll get it all done quickly and have some fun while we’re at it when we have a big group of grown-ups and kids helping out. Please join us after school this Friday, Nov. 7 from 2:30 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. in the courtyard (entrance is through the lobby). We’ll start there and then go outdoors to work on the gardens. We will have all of the tools you’ll need and snacks and refreshments! Tasks: Greenhouse tidying and reorg Sweep leaf litter and debris in courtyard Deadhead in vegetable garden outdoors, rake leaves Deadhead and weed the senses garden Add mulch to the native garden We will have another working session to build raised beds in the courtyard and corner beds in the vegetable garden outside. Alexandria Book Shelf in Main Lobby

Starwood Hotels employees were on site August 8, 2014, to do a variety of beautification projects at MVCS. Check out the playground paintings and the NEW Alexandria Book Shelf in the main lobby. Special thanks to our volunteer coordinator Amanda Ruff for helping out as parent liaison for this project. And thanks to art teacher Sara Bukoski for creating the wonderful train artwork on top! Students, teachers, staff, parents, may pull books from these shelves anytime to take home and enjoy. There is no time limit on book return. We are in search of volunteers to help maintain and keep the shelves tidy and accessible. Volunteer Opportunity: Landscaping Front of School — August 17, 2014

We will be finishing the garden borders on the Mt Vernon Avenue side of the school this coming Sunday, August 17, 2014. We will be adding the border around the second large bed, and also putting topsoil into both. So we could use some good rakers, shovelers, and dirt movers! We may also get some additional mulch. Book Fair: October 7-11, 2013

Our book fair is next week, October 7-11, 2013! At least 25% of all profits come back to our library for new books, special programming and fun events. Monday and Tuesday are “preview” days and students can purchase books Wednesday-Thursday until 7pm. Help Needed: Every class will visit the library on Monday and Tuesday to preview this year’s selection. Students will make a list of the titles they like with prices to take home. We could use really use volunteers to help out, especially with the lower grades. Volunteer Opportunity: Big Flea Shop ‘n Drops

Who’s ready to rock the 2014 Big Flea?! The Big Flea is a huge flea market fundraiser that has raised over $150,000 for the MVCS PTA since 2007. We take donations of furniture, household items, baby gear, toys, etc. and turn them into cash. We need volunteers to help make this happen! For just a two-hour time commitment you can make a huge difference. Volunteering for the Flea is fun — sometimes weird — and always a great way to meet other parents and school supporters. Plus, have we mentioned the cool shirts? We need your help October 19! Our first Shop ‘n Drop will be all Drop, no Shop, and will take place at our warehouse on Saturday, October 19 from 2-4PM at 3815 Mt. Vernon Ave. (the shopping center next to MOMs Organic Market).
