Current Volunteer Opportunities

The Big Flea needs two types of volunteers for the next several Saturday afternoons (You can just help out on any one of them, however):

  1. Hearty souls that can pick up large items from donors around the neighborhood. If you have a large vehicle or pick up, or if you like to lift heavy things, we need you
  2. Folks who prefer to watch others do the lifting can staff the drop off location.

Parent Involvement is Essential for Our Success!

Here is a rundown of several ways you can contribute to your child’s environment at MVCS. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact our PTA president, Susan Rutherford (email to susan [at] rford.net) , who can put you in contact with the appropriate chair person. Or come to our next PTA meeting and let us know you’re willing to help!

Programs & Enrichment

  • Reflections Family Night (9/25): help students create art, photo, music, essays for district wide competition
  • International Night (11/20): create program, entertainment, serve food, make decorations, lead activities, clean up
  • Science Family Night (2/26): help plan program for hands-on science projects
  • After-School Clubs (Fall, Winter): help with registration, assist with a club
  • Health & Wellness: help on Walk 2 School Days (9/30, 4/21), with Bike Rodeo (May), develop new activities

Teacher & Staff Appreciation

  • Conference Dinners (9/24, 3/18): bring side dish, drinks or dessert
  • Holiday Treats (12/22): bring treats, write notes, package or deliver
  • Teacher Appreciation Week (5/3-5/7):
  • help organize, write notes, bring treats

Community Building

  • Yearbook: take photos, help with layout
  • Beautification (10/24, 5/22): plant, weed or rake around school grounds (with kids)
  • Celebrations: plan, help day of event

Fundraising

  • Barnes & Noble Bookfair (12/5): promote, assist with program, wrap books
  • Big Flea market (4/23, 4/24): promote, collect items, store, set-up, sell, clean-up

Communications & Outreach

  • Help manage communication channels: web site, wiki, email, flyers, white board, bulletin boards
  • Spanish Translation (from English)
  • Outreach & Advocacy: Update MVCS community to Alexandria City Public Schools happenings
