Want to help with the MVCS Children’s Garden and Outdoor Learning Group?

We are creating a master plan for the courtyard and the outdoor garden space. We have a rain garden, native plant, vegetable, and senses garden. We’d love help with watering and weeding, doing PR, art projects like this year’s 5th-grade mosaics, as well as plans for new design initiatives to inspire hands-on learning in the gardens and courtyard. Reflections Family Fun Arts Night: Deadline for Entries is October 21, 2011

The PTA Reflections arts contest theme for the 2011-12 school year is “Diversity Is…”

Reflections is a national PTA arts program that encourages children (preK to 12th grade) to create art around a different theme each year. It begins with a school-level competition. Students compete against other students in their own age range. For MVCS, that means one division for K-2 and another one for Grades 3-5.  First-place-winning entries from MVCS go on to compete against first-place winners from other ACPS schools. First-place entries from Alexandria compete next against the Northern Virginia District winners. Next level is state, and then national.

Artwork must be created by the student alone! Parents and teachers may act in cheerleading and facilitating roles only; they cannot help with the art. And artwork must be created by ONE student; no joint entries are accepted. Each student may submit as many entries as he or she wants, but has to fill out a separate entry form for each.  Art is accepted in six categories:

  • Music Composition
  • Visual Arts
  • Film
  • Photography
  • Dance Choreography
  • Literature

After School Clubs

Fall 2011 After School Club registration has begun.  Clubs runs from October 24 - December 16. Registration has two deadlines: first-round is September 28, second-round registration is October 5. Completed registrations along with payment should be placed in the PTA mailbox in the office.Forms have been placed in teacher mailboxes for distribution to begin on Wednesday, September 21. CLUB DESCRIPTIONS ARE ONLY AVAILABLE ON THE YAHOO LISTSERV AND THE PTA WEBSITE.
